The title says is all, folks. They are everywhere. From Westbrook to the RI boarder schools of false albacore are terrorizing small bait. The sound is loaded with a variety of bait right now. We are seeing peanut bunker in a couple different sizes and bay anchovies by the millions. As exciting as this is, it can make the fish “picky” when there is so much to choose from. take a look a the bait a single fish spit up while we were out on Tuesday.
Our advice is to GO SMALL! Little jigs will out fish large ones in schools of finicky fish. As you can see in the above picture, the 1 oz Game On EXO Jig fooled fish keyed in on small bait. These fish will mix with spanish macks and bluefish at times so be prepared to loose gear. 15 lb leader and a quiver of jigs will keep you catching more fish!
The poor striped bass! Kind of like the red headed stepchild of September when the albies come in. It’s actually refreshing that people are letting them be while the funny fish are around. If you need your striped bass fix, fear not as they are biting very well. Topwater bites are starting in the early morning hours and continuing into the afternoon most days. Fish from 20-30″ are commonplace. The Ocean Born Poppers are winning the day out fishing most topwater baits. Captain Mike Pirri of Flying Connies Charters is having luck working mojo rigs and jigs and is finding some larger fish to 40″.
Seabass seem to be raging lately and easy limits have been caught all week. Clams are the go to bait lately, so pick accordingly when you are headed out.
