August 6th - The Topwater Bite is Picking Up

Stripers and Blues

Striped bass fishing continues to be solid throughout our part of the Sound, with plentiful bass of a variety of sizes hitting many different presentations. The topwater bite is starting to pick up, which is a typical pattern for later summer. It should continue to improve as we move into true fall fishing, which is surprisingly only a handful of weeks away. Live eels drifted freely over shallow reefs are doing very well this week, as are live bunker, which of course has been true all year.

If you see birds or surface action happening, throwing smaller topwater plugs like poppers or spooks is a great way to get involved, as is a small epoxy jig. BHO Westbrook just took a large shipment of Game On! EXO Jigs, an incredibly popular local epoxy jig for stripers and albies. Shimano Current Snipers are also a great little jig to toss into blitzing fish.

Bluefish remain in the area, as many soft plastics bait anglers can attest to. They’ll be here through fall, so if you aren’t enjoying finding them it may be time to check another spot. If you want to keep enjoying the action, switching over to single inline hooks on your plugs

Seabass and Porgies

The best seabass reports have been coming from those out deep. Anglers using heavier weight on bait rigs in over 100’ have been finding good piles of fish. Heavier jigs like the Daiwa SK are also producing good fish. Porgy fishing continues to be good, with anglers having luck on sandworms and squid, as well as small epoxy and metal jigs in deeper water jigging vertically.

Fluke

Fluke fishing has been solid for those willing to take a ride to some less-pressured water. Having a variety of colors of sizes of bucktails is key, and getting fresh bait is also going to help a lot if you want to tip your rigs with bait.
